It seems that Sam Mendes is a man who prefers to keep his friends close – even when he’s hopping on a franchise bandwagon. David Arnold, the man who composed the scores for the last five James Bond films (dating all the way back to the Pierce Brosnan-led Tomorrow Never Dies), has been replaced by Mendes’ frequent collaborator, Thomas Newman. This follows the news that Arnold was busy all year scoring the London 2012 Olympics, making his abandonment of the installment a necessity; Newman, who composed the scores to four out of five of the films in Mendes’ filmography (Away We Go being the only exception), has been brought on board Daniel Craig‘s latest outing, Skyfall, to replace him. But before Bond fanatics run home to find their pitchforks, they should note that Mendes has made every effort to maintain consistency within the franchise: everything from ensuring the proper drink orders to hiring back old members of staff. It’s also worth noting that Newman is hardly a composer to be dismissed; with an impressive 10 Oscar nominations (including a pair while collaborating with Mendes), a handful of Golden Globe nominations and an Emmy, it looks like the series is an excellent hands. ~Devin Garabedian
