The Queen and Bond parachute into Olympic stadium
The 2012 Summer Olympics kicked off in style Friday night when Daniel Craig – appearing as none other than James Bond himself – starred in a video alongside the Queen of England; a video that resulted in the pair “parachuting” into the building. In an unprecedented move, filmmaker and opening ceremony director Danny Boyle was given exhaustive access to Buckingham Palace – including several private rooms – in order to prerecord a skit earlier this year starring the latest actor to don the guise of the world’s most famous secret agent. Once inside, Craig was shown making his way to the Queen’s private chambers, where he then escorted her to a waiting helicopter that would take her to the Olympic Stadium. And though it seemed obvious that Bond (or, at least, a stuntman playing Bond) would be parachuting into the stadium from the helicopter, what was more surprising was that a stunt Queen preceded him, sporting a Union Jack flag parachute. The stunt was both a thoroughly British-centric way of opening the international games as well as a powerful endorsement of Bond’s latest cinematic outing, Sam Mendes‘ Skyfall, due out on November 9th. ~Devin Garabedian
