Sony plans next Bond for late 2014
Fun fact: the time lapse between Marc Forster‘s Quantum of Solace and Sam Mendes‘ Skyfall (four years, to be exact) is the longest time between James Bond releases where the lead actor was not replaced in the franchise’s 50 year history; and no, that’s not necessarily any cause to be alarmed about the film. The reason for this was purely financial, as the studio that previously owned the rights, MGM, suffered a massively public bankruptcy that violently upset the state of Hollywood for several years (see also: Peter Jackson‘s long-delayed Hobbit trilogy, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard‘s The Cabin in the Woods and the upcoming remake of Red Dawn) and delayed the start of production on “Bond 23.” Now, with the rights completely handled by Sony, the company in charge has absolutely no plans to let such a lucrative brand suffer such a cruel fate again. As a result, the company’s President of World Distribution, Rory Bruer, announced at CinemaCon last April that he wants to ensure that “Bond 24” – that is, Skyfall‘s successor – makes its way into theaters no later than the end of 2014, most likely November, as all of the Daniel Craig-fronted Bond films have seen release during that month. Whether or not Craig returns after Skyfall is yet to be determined, as his contract expires after the third film. Not to worry, however; Craig has shown no signs of wishing to leave the franchise. We’ll know once everybody sees how Skyfall performs when it hits theaters on November 9th. ~Devin Garabedian
