In a growing cinematic trend, the latest James Bond film from director Sam Mendes, Skyfall, will see an IMAX release when it hits theaters later this year. The format was largely popularized several years ago by Christopher Nolan with his Dark Knight trilogy, and films released in IMAX are now often seen as cinematic events – leading many to herald it as the savior of cinema, rather than 3D. And while Nolan has infamously shot large portions of his IMAX films in the native 70mm film stock of the medium, Skyfall will be a post-conversion process, the result of the lack of premeditated decision. Still, the release is one to get excited about, and is certainly a far superior format in which to view the big-budget action film. “Skyfall will be the cool, must-see event release of the fall,” says Rory Bruer, the President of Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution in a press release. “And releasing the film in IMAX only reinforces that.” Skyfall marks the 23rd film in the James bond franchise, and the third for current-generation face of the character, Daniel Craig. It opens wide on November 9, 2012. ~Devin Garabedian
