Though many have praised Daniel Craig‘s gritty, contemporary take on the James Bond character that began in Casino Royale, it turns out that the interpretation still has its critics: most notably, one-time Bond alumni George Lazenby, who starred as the secret agent in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service in 1969. In a sit-down with Entertainment Weekly, Lazenby expressed concerns over the darker, more violent turn that 007 has taken a turn towards in his last few offerings. “He’s a fantastic actor,” says Lazenby of Craig, “but [his movies] are more violent, aren’t they? It’s the way our society has gone.” Lazenby seems equally disappointed in the tonal shift that has permeated Craig’s take on the character, claiming that there is something missing between the old generation and the new. “You can’t have someone who’s got feelings now,” he explains. “Bond has to be able to shoot someone now and kiss a girl three minutes later. When I did it, it had more heart. There’s no heart to the new Bond.” Ironically, this complaint is in direct contrast to Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace detractors, who were worried that his love story and subsequent vendetta mission were too heartfelt and out of line with the character.
